Research activities

His research activities have addressed the following research areas:

1. Economics and management of intellectual property rights

In recent years he has carried out different empirical and theoretical studies that have addressed the economic impact of intellectual property law on firms’ innovation incentives. In particular his econometric research has focussed on the economic and strategic implications of patent litigation and of the international harmonisation of patent law.

2. Innovation and finance

His recent studies in this field consist of empirical analyses on the determinants of financial constraints to R&D investments, the impact of European bank regulation on innovation activities and the role of public funding to support the venture capital industry. Related publications have appeared journals including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Journal of Business Research and International Small Business Journal. In this filed, he has been the scientific supervisor of a research grant by the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund. The cooperation with the European Investment Fund involved the collection and elaboration of data on publicly sponsored venture capital fund across Europe.

3. Productivity and innovation dynamics

This research line consists of a series of empirical studies that have addressed the dynamics of firm-level productivity with a specific focus on Italian manufacturing companies. The research activities benefited from a collaboration with researchers affiliated to the Bureau of research on Innovation Complexity and Knowledge (Collegio Carlo Alberto). Results of this line of research have appeared in different international journals, including Economics of Innovation and New Technologies, Structural Change and Economic Dynamics, Journal of Evolutionary Economics.

4. Economics of science

This line of research is dedicated to the study of the role and impact of economic incentives on the process of production and exploitation of scientific discoveries and on the dynamics of scientific systems.

He has been the principal investigator for a research grant (co-funded by the National Bureau of Economic Research NBER, years 2009-2012) focused on the analysis of the processes of globalisation of science and related impacts on the competitiveness of countries’ scientific systems. The outcomes of this grant consisted in the generation of the GlobSci dataset, which include detailed information on international mobility patterns of scientists for 16 countries. The GlobSci dataset represent currently the most comprehensive individual-level dataset on researchers migration flows.
